IOWA — In honor of International Credit Union (ICU) Day being celebrated on October 19th around the globe, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation declaring today as “Credit Union Day” in Iowa.

The Governor’s Credit Union Day proclamation recognizes the Iowa credit union industry for its continuing advancement of the financial well-being of credit union members and the contributions made to their respective communities. It states, “Credit unions embrace a ‘people-helping-people’ philosophy through pooling of personal resources and leadership abilities for the good of the cooperative, empowering members to improve their financial future and uniting to help those in need.”

As not-for-profit, financial cooperatives, Iowa credit unions serve more than 1.6 million members and help them save more than $150 million annually through better rates and fewer fees than other financial institutions. Globally, credit unions serve 375 million members in 118 countries.

“Today, we take time to celebrate the positive impact Iowa credit unions have on our local communities,” said Murray Williams, President and CEO of the Iowa Credit Union League. “International Credit Union Day highlights the people-helping-people spirit of the credit union movement and our cooperative movement’s commitment to improving the financial lives of Iowans. In addition to financial literacy outreach, we work collaboratively with community partners to address issues like affordable housing and access to childcare to help remove barriers that hinder economic opportunity and upward mobility for Iowans.”

Sponsored by the World Council of Credit Unions since 1948, ICU Day is celebrated to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union difference. This year, credit unions around the world are celebrating 75 years of ICU Day.

International Credit Union Day is also part of the broader National Cooperative Month celebrated by Iowa credit unions and the greater cooperative movement. Find more information on co-op month at www.iowacooperatives.com.
