Iowa Credit Union Foundation Awards $23,000 to Scholarship Winners

The annual scholarship program is in memory of the late Warren Morrow.

DES MOINES – The Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) recently awarded scholarships to eight high school students and four post-high school students as recipients of its Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship.

The annual scholarship program is in memory of the late Warren Morrow and is open to credit union members pursuing or completing post-secondary education.

This year's post-high school recipients are:

• $2,000 to Brian Grimes, a member of DuTrac Community Credit Union who currently attends University of Iowa
• $2,000 to Rachel Weigel, a member of Linn Area Credit Union who currently attends University of Iowa
• $2,000 to Roland Onwona-Agyeman, a member of Community Choice Credit Union who currently attends Creighton University
• $2,000 to Alice Lind, a member of 1st Gateway Credit Union who currently Indiana University

This year's eight high school senior recipients are:

• $3,000 to Luz V. Florez-Maciel, a member of Veridian Credit Union and a graduating senior at Abraham Lincoln High School, Des Moines, IA
• $3,000 to Amera Nakurutimana, a member of Alliant Credit Union and a graduating senior at Prairie High School, Cedar Rapids, IA
• $2,000 to Piper Carroll, a member of Community Choice Credit Union and a graduating senior at Waukee High School, Waukee, IA
• $2,000 to Olivia Hefel, a member of Dupaco Community Credit Union and a graduating senior at Western Dubuque High School, Epworth, IA
• $1,500 to Macy Schulz, a member of Community 1st Credit Union and a graduating senior at Pella Community High School, Pella, IA
• $1,500 to Gabrielle Tammarine, a member of Quaker Oats Credit Union and a graduating senior at Linn-Mar High School, Marion, IA
• $1,000 to Adeline Bowman, a member of DuTrac Community Credit Union and a graduating senior at Maquoketa High School, Maquoketa, IA
• $1,000 to Elizabeth Collins, a member of Premier Credit Union and a graduating senior at Colfax Mingo High School, Colfax, IA

Applicants completed an online entry form and answered an essay question. This year’s question was:

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on personal health and financial well-being for many in our community. Thousands of Iowans have lost jobs or experienced reduced work hours, highlighting the critical need for access to emergency savings. Please share strategies that encourage or incent savings and how your credit union can assist. Consider sharing personal examples in this essay.

Morrow Memorial Scholarship. This year’s scholarship finalists demonstrated a strong passion for their credit union and outstanding knowledge on the essay topic.”
